  1. mustafa imir,

Hi Talk To Me In Korean.I am having trouble understanding when to use -(์ด)๋ž‘ or -ํ•˜๊ณ  with ๊ฐ™๋‹ค.Thank you for teaching everyone Korean and I really appreciate it! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Laurel Impello,

level 3 lesson 9 covers this. You can use -(์ด)๋ž‘ and -ํ•˜๊ณ  interchangeably. You simply use ๊ฐ™์•„์š” after nouns to say they are the same, and ๋ž‘ or ํ•˜๊ณ  connects the two nouns, for example ์ด์ฑ…์€ ๋ž‘ ๊ทธ์ฑ… ๊ฐ™์•„์š” is how you would say This book and that book are the same. When using verbs, you must change them into their noun form, level 3 lesson 9 covers how to do that.
      Hope this helped!

์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š”, ์„ ์ƒ๋‹˜๋“ค. ์งˆ๋ฌธ ํ•ด๋„ ๋ ๊นŒ์š”? I have been reviewing my TTMIK Books and I try to use my workbook to review, but I can’t find the link for the Workbook MP3 audio. 7. Elodi,

Hi TTMIK i have some question regarding level 3 lesson 14
    1. does ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑฐ mean ‘eating’ or ‘the thing you eat’?
    2. what’s the difference between ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑฐ and ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฒŒ?
    Thank you in advance

    • Chelsea Findley,

It means โ€œthe act of eatingโ€
      Ex. ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑฐ ์ข‹์•„ํ•ด์š”
      I like eating
(Lit. I like to do the act of eating )

      ๊ทธ ๊ฐ€์ˆ˜๋ž‘ ์‚ฌ์ง„ ์ฐ๋Š” ๊ฑฐ ํ•˜๋ฉด ์ข‹๊ฒ ์–ด์š”.
I would like to take a photo with that singer
(Lit. If i could do the action of taking a photo with that singer, it would be nice)

    • Mateusz Koczkodaj,

This is just an abbreviated form ๐Ÿ™‚
      ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑฐ๊ฐ€ = ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฒŒ
      ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑฐ๋ฅผ = ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑธ
      ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑฐ๋Š” = ๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑด

๋จน๋Š” ๊ฑฐ mean ‘eating’ as well as ‘the thing you eat’ – context is crucial in these types of situations. I also highly recommend reading about the nuances between ~๊ธฐ and ~๋Š” ๊ฒƒ because they aren’t always interchangeable!
      ํŒŒ์ดํŒ…!

      • Wiktoria Burcon,

        are you from poland?

      • Mateusz Koczkodaj,

        means*

  8. Amaiya Kerns,

Also, I’m happy that you guys offer a level test. I’ve been learning Korean for years now and because it’s mostly been self-teaching I never knew what level I was. I knew I wasn’t completely beginner but I couldn’t confidently say intermediate but in-between sounds about right. I feel better knowing this.

    • Essence ,

Could I join the kakao group too? I would like to practice as well!

      • Leomar Araujo,

i’m in a discord group, there are many people and friends there who are also learning Korean and the teacher is korean

  10. Antonia Espigares,

Thanks TTMIK!!! I just finished level 3 today!! For me the hardest thing are the verb irregularities, how do you manage to remember them all and consolidate? It is really hard…

    • FHD,

One day one word and then practice makes perfect

      • emz,

hi! um, I have a question about lesson 24… does the ending -์–ด/์—ฌ/์•„๋„ change the verbs with ๋ฅด in it too? because in the workbook there is a sentence with that as the prompt in the parenthesis and the verb was changed in the answer key but -์–ด/์—ฌ/์•„๋„ was not mentioned as one of the 3 endings in the textbook and audio… thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Janet,

Wow that was a lot of information to digest ๐Ÿ˜€ But understand the script but still suck at grammar as always hahah ;D

  12. Angel Dominick Mkumbo,

I just don’t know how to thank you enough. I finished level three today and as I was reviewing, I followed your instructions of listening first without reading the PDF and I’m telling you I understood 80% of the dialogue. I am so happy. To anyone reading this, do not give up and always remember that HARD WORK PAYS OFF.

        Me

      • YhaezhaUhzen Payra De Guzman,

        Me if you want

  19. ๋งˆ์•ผ,

I really enjoy your lessons and I am learning a lot in Level 3.
I am just a little confused by the concepts of โ€œbefore ์ „์—โ€ and โ€œafter ๋‹ค์Œ์—โ€ when they are used with verbs in Korean: When you use โ€œafterโ€ with a verb you take the Verbstem+๊ธฐ + ์ „์—. However when you use โ€œbeforeโ€ with a verb you take the Verbstem+์€/ใ„ด + ๋‹ค์Œ์—.
    ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•˜๊ธฐ ์ „์— = before studying
    ๊ณต๋ถ€ ํ•œ ๋‹ค์Œ์— = after studying
So, with ์ „์—you basically turn the verb into a noun, but with ๋‹ค์Œ์—you use a modifier for the verb and turn it into an adjective in the past tense. Why are they different?

Is there a general rule for when to use a korean grammatical pattern by turning a verb into a noun and when to use a grammar pattern by changing the verb with a modifier?

    Thank you so much. ์ •๋ง ๊ฐ์‚ฌํ•ฉ๋‹ˆ๋‹ค.
This would really help me to understand the Korean language better.

    • candice,

hello/i think there is not general saying whether to use verb in noun form or not.memorizing them by listening their topics from kdramas, kpops stuff is a good thing .

      • candice,

and in usage of BEFORE, it is literally before doing IT .. so verb form is changed into noun form . and in usage of AFTER, the thing is ,.you have done it .right? so we conjugated verb stem into past tense verb form (์€)ใ„ด ..

    • ๋งˆ์•ผ,

I still would really appreciate your help…please

  20. beojkkoch,

I am in awe of people who persevere! I just completed Level 3…and I feel like I have all this knowledge but when it comes to writing a sentence, I have a mental block! Does anyone else have the same problem? I do understand some of the dialogues but what is helping you guys get ahead? I’m curious…TIA

    • carolyn,

me too! after every lesson i feel as if i learned a lot but when it comes to actually forming sentences, then i’m completely stuck ๐Ÿ™ all the grammar rules are really difficult to remember, but when i feel discouraged, i always remind myself why i’m making such an effort to learn this and how thankful we are to have such a great resource like this to learn from! fighting!!

    • Vivid Plum Roha,

I have the same problem as well! I can write some words but when i try to write sentences i feel like my knowledge is at level one..

    • Josephine Lee,

Along with these lessons, you should be building your vocabulary. I started a journal. In it, I write about my day, my thoughts, and feelings, etc. I try to write as much as I can in Korean. And then whatever I have left are the vocabulary I should be learning since I use those the most often to express myself.

I’ve also put sticky notes on almost every surface and object of my house with their names, colors, etc.

After each lesson, I take the time to write out sentences using the grammar rules from that lesson while also incorporating grammar rules from past lessons, as well as whatever vocabulary I am trying to learn that week.

I also have written on my whiteboard the reason why I am learning Korean and it helps to be reminded about that.

      ํ•  ์ˆ˜ ์žˆ์–ด์š”! ํŒŒ์ดํŒ…!

      • Sharmistha Jatua,

        This suggestion is really helpful!!!!!!!

    • joymargarette ambrocio,

hi everyone .. how to upgrade the merbership here ,,,

    • Marine,

When you finish a lesson, try to build 5 sentences with what you just learn. It will help a lot !

      • Vivid Plum Roha,

Can u teach me how? :<

    • Justin Freemantle,

I know this sounds bland, but practice! The more you use a language the easier and more natural itโ€™ll be to speak with it in the future! I donโ€™t have any friends to practice speaking with, so I use my cat :p.

  23. Charisse Talle,

I’m back to learning Korean again after a few years and I took the placement test. I’m supposed to be at level 5 but I wanted to review so I finished Level 1 and 2 in 2 weeks now I’m on Level 3. Thank you so much TTMIK!

    • Charisse Talle,

Before I start the Level I listen to the last Lesson which has the 100% Korean Dialogue to test my knowledge. I must say Level 3 has the best dialogue so far. It was very fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • TalkToMeInKorean Staff,

Thanks ! ๐Ÿ™‚ We hope you continue to find our courses helpful ! Happy studying ^^

      • Kayshawna Thompson,

Hello. I would like to know why some verbs and adjectives are conjugated like this, for example: ์•„ํŒŒ์™”์–ด….

I saw this in a song and I was wondering why it is conjugated like this. Shouldn’t it be ์•„ํผ์š”?

      • Kayshawna Thompson,

        ***์•„ํŒŒ์š”***

      • Damar Abram,

        I think ์•„๋น ์™”์–ด is dad is coming…
        And ์•„๋น ์š” means ‘it’s hurt.’

        CMIIW.

      • let's GO !!,

        You mean ์•„์˜์š”…(hurt)..

      • Damar Abram,

        Ah wait.. it’s ์•„ํŒŒ์™”์–ด and ์•„ํŒŒ์š” …

  24. Theresia Hindriadita,

    ์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š” ์„ ์ƒ๋‹˜, ์งˆ๋ฌธ์ด ์žˆ์–ด์š”.

According to level 3 lesson 18, ๋ฐ–์— must be followed by negative verbs. I want to ask, how about the if sentences? Should ๋ฐ–์— needs to be followed by negative verbs as well? Because Ive seen the sentence like this : ์ง€๊ธˆ ๋ฐ–์— ๋‚˜๊ฐ€๋ฉด, ๋ฐ”๋ผ๋ฏธ ๋งŽ์ด ๋ถˆ ๊ฑฐ์—์š”.

    Thank you! ^_^

    • TalkToMeInKorean Staff,

      Good question ! ๐Ÿ™‚ They are homonyms. (1) ๋ฐ–์— + negative conjugation -> “only” (2) ์ง€๊ธˆ ๋ฐ–์— ๋‚˜๊ฐ€๋ฉด, ๋ฐ”๋žŒ์ด ๋งŽ์ด ๋ถˆ ๊ฑฐ์—์š”-> outside, outdoors. ๋ฐ–์— which means outside can be followed by positive words! ex) ๋ฐ–์— ๋ˆˆ์ด ์™€์š” (It’s snowing outside.) / ๋ฐ–์— ์‹œ์›ํ•œ ๋ฐ”๋žŒ์ด ๋ถˆ์–ด์š” (A cool breeze is blowing outside) Hope you find this helpful. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Theresia Hindriadita,

Ahh I see, so ๋ฐ–์— has several meaning and several ways to use it.

Thank you for the explanation. I clearly understand it now ๐Ÿ˜Š
